Valentine’s day: love is in the air, along with the sweet aroma of rich heart chocolates and personalized flowers. Everyone has their special someone in mind, whether it’s a lover, family member, or friend. But amidst all the grand gestures and post-worthy moments, you can’t forget the most important person to love: yourself.

For some, Valentine’s day is a fairytale: a day to cherish deep connections and romantic bliss. For others, it’s a reminder of being alone or the expectations of going all out to prove their never ending love. But love isn’t all about the candlelit dinners; at its core, love is about care, understanding, and appreciation, and that should start with yourself.

Self-love is not just a trendy concept, it’s an essential part of any relationship. How can you fully love others if you don’t nurture, respect, and cherish yourself first? This Valentine’s, rather than longing for external validation, why not celebrate the love you can cultivate from within?

Here are some simple ways you can love yourself a little more than yesterday:

  1. Indulge in what makes you happy: Whether it’s a solo movie night, a good book, or cooking yourself a fancy meal, treat yourself to a gift you’d give to someone you love.

  2. Write yourself a love letter: “Words of affirmation” is a common love language–regardless if it’s used playfully or seriously–but when was the last time you said something positive about yourself? Write down what you appreciate about yourself, no matter how big or small.

  3. Express yourself creatively: Sometimes self-love means giving yourself the space to express who you really are: art, music, writing, dancing, or any other creative outlet you enjoy can do this.

  4. Pamper yourself: Try a long walk in nature, eating your favorite snack, or even sleeping in untill 1 p.m. Self-care comes in many forms and it’s never a selfish act: it’s necessary.

  5. Celebrate all forms of love: We all love romance but it’s only a small piece of the puzzle that makes us fulfilled. Celebrating friendships and family–the people who make your life brighter–and gifting a heartfelt message to a loved one is just as meaningful as receiving one.

Love isn’t just about the euphoric butterflies or the striking displays. It’s about the small moments that lift your spirits, the kindness and respect and care, and things you deserve to feel every day: not just on February 14. Even if you’re spending it with a significant other, your best friends, or in the comforting company of yourself, remember: you are enough.

So go ahead, buy yourself those flowers, enjoy that chocolate Kiss, and celebrate the beautiful relationship you have with yourself.
