As the chilly air warms, Maria Carrillo High School’s track and field team is lacing up and striking the start of a new season. Returning athletes are hungry for personal records as coaches are eager to raise prospects. With the beginning of the Spring season, the speedy Pumas are ready to make their mark on the track. Head Coach Greg Fogg expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming season, stating that ”we have a great blend of opportunities for everyone here” to the new coming athletes at MCHS experiencing their first taste of high school track and field.

Maria Carrillo boasts a strong and flexible track and field program that allows all athletes to meet their highest potential for events they specialize in. Over the past month, with the track season officially underway, athletes have undeniably been working hard to compete at the approaching meets. Among these events is the scrimmage, which splits the team between green and gold to give athletes a meet-like experience for confidence. The Big Cat Invitational meet at Santa Rosa High School ultimately marked the start of competition in the league. The season-initiating invitational offers a valuable opportunity for runners, jumpers, and throwers to assess their personal season and set realistic goals for themselves.

For many athletes, the start of the season brings a lot of excitement and nerves. A returning athlete, Christian Esguerra shared his thoughts before the Big Cat Invitational, stating,” I’m worried about approaching the Big Cat because I'm not sure if I am ready,” regarding the immense preparation needed to succeed in these meets. The foundations leading up to the events can be intense and the pressure to perform can be overwhelming. However, despite the uncertainty, the Pumas remain focused and determined to grow. The team will test their speed, endurance, and athleticism in these meets against tough competition. Newcomers also feel the bright and enthusiastic atmosphere of the season. A junior, Felipe Concepcion, a new incoming team member spoke well about his experience on the team so far, stating, “the coaches are very positive and welcoming and the community is very supportive. I see myself developing as an athlete under their presence.” The mentorship of an experienced and advocating coach is a crucial part of paving the way for an athlete, which ensures finding their strengths and making improvements throughout the season.

As the season progresses, the practices intensify rigorously at the MCHS Track. Many off-season athletes are adjusting to the increased physical demands of training. “I noticed that the practices got harder from the first day,” mentioned Carlo Cuniberti, a sophomore. The athletes' dedication to training is crucial as the Pumas expect tough competition throughout the season. The Track and Field roster expects to grow further after concluding seasons of some Winter Sports. Additionally, Coach Victor Hudson’s Norcal Elite Track and Field club student athletes will join after the Cal Comers meet in Berkeley on February 22, adding depth and talent to an already promising squad.

With strong leadership, determined athletes, and a supportive environment, Maria Carrillo’s Track and Field team is expecting an impressive season. As they push through tough training sessions and intense competition, it is inevitable that the Pumas are prepared for complex challenges, setting new records, and showcasing their relentless spirit on the Track. The season may be demanding, but the Pumas are built for success.
